The Principles of Estuarine Habitat Restoration is the centerpiece of collaboration between Restore America's Estuaries and the Estuarine Research Federation (
download document as pdf - 28 pages, 216K).

This document is a set of working principles developed to help guide restoration activities and emphasizes:

  • the importance of a long-term stewardship approach to restoration ,and incorporation of ecological sensitivity into all restoration planning and practice;

  • the need to establish clear, realistic goals for restoration activities at both the estuary and project levels;

  • the need to find ways to demonstrate to the public that progress is being made, even though full restoration of function may take 10-20 years or more, and

  • the critical nature of building a strong public constituency to support habitat restoration.
